Clarksburg Council Election Preview: Tom Saunders

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — “This is home.”

That’s why Clarksburg native Tom Saunders returned to West Virginia in 1993, and he said that’s why he’s running for Clarksburg City Council now.

Saunders is a former employee of the United Summit Center. He has also worked in various managerial positions for a number of area businesses. He said he’s running so his children and grandchildren might have the same opportunities he had.

“I hope that they are able to stay in this area because I believe wholeheartedly that North Central West Virginia has so much to offer,” he said.

Saunders, who ran a losing campaign for the Harrison County Board of Education in 2002, said he has a vision of a vibrant Clarksburg.

“I’m really going to try to get on the side of the people and try to make Clarksburg what we know it can be,” he said.

Additionally, Saunders said that it’s important to have a City Council that can help unite people.

“I’d love to see everyone just kind of be able to get along and help each other like the old days in West Virginia, when people would actually go ahead and lend a hand instead of saying get out,” he said.

The election is June 6. Early voting begins May 24.
