WVU football player cited for having gun at high school basketball game

wvu-pitts-188x251CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A West Virginia University football player has been cited for having a gun with him at a high school sporting event in Charleston, according to police.

Derrek Pitts, 19, of South Charleston, was cited at George Washington High School Saturday night.

Pitts was attending the George Washington versus South Charleston basketball game.

Police apparently smelled marijuana from Pitts’ vehicle where he was in the driver’s seat. No drugs were found.

Officers said Pitts admitted he had a gun. He was cited for having a concealed weapon on school property while being under the age of 21.
