MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. — The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) reports the employees of the Monongalia County Assessor’s Office have voted to unionize. UMWA officials said the employees have won a significant victory by achieving the collective power and voice they’ve been seeking.

“We are proud to welcome the employees of the Monongalia County Assessor’s Office to the UMWA family,” said International President Cecil E. Roberts. “Their decision puts them on a path toward greater job security, fair treatment, and representation on the job. We will ensure that their voices are heard and their rights are protected.”

Earlier this year, UMWA representatives asked the commission for a resolution to endorse the process; however, commissions at the time said there was no need for an endorsement.

During the process, UMWA Director of Communications Erin Bates told WAJR News union representation would allow each side to negotiate a contract that could be implemented to address the issues concerning the employees.

“They want someone to come in and help create a fair, just atmosphere in their workplace,” Bates said. “So, for each little gritty issue that the employee might have, they took the time to come to the union to ask for help, and then they obviously believe they need help.”

“We applaud the workers in the Monongalia County Assessor’s Office for their determination and resolve in seeking a voice in their workplace,” said UMWA International District 31 Vice President Michael Payton. “The employees have made it clear they want the union on their side, and we appreciate Assessor Mark Musick for facilitating the election process fairly and ensuring the vote took place.”

Members of the Monongalia County Commission have not yet commented on the matter.
