UNIONTOWN, W.Va. — A 33-year-old Uniontown man has been charged after police allege he beat his fiancee’s two-year-old daughter to death.

Emmanuel Thomas Dennis was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault after he complained to detectives about the “terrible twos” and admitted to beating the child. Dennis also told police he didn’t want to take the child to the hospital due to the fear of sparking an investigation into abuse.

Police were called to the residence around noon Monday and learned whether Dennis was the mother of the child and checked on the child since 7 that morning.

EMTs rendered aid at the scene, but the child died later at the Uniontown Hospital.

The girl’s mother told police the child had a head injury and had been acting tired and lethargic.

The mother also told police Dennis beat the child twice over the last four days and, on one occasion, dragged the girl to her room and hit her multiple times. When she tried to take the child to get medical attention, Dennis stopped her because of the visible injuries to the child.

Dennis is being held in the Fayette County Jail without bail.

The investigation remains active.
