MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia Professional Charter School Board has given their authorization to the Wisdom Academy. The Wisdom Academy will serve up to 100 students and operate from the former headquarters of Monongalia County Schools on South High Street.
Executive Director of the state Professional Charter School Board James Paul told board members he is working with the board of the school to make final preparations in order to welcome students.
“The board voted to authorize the Wisdom Academy as a public charter school in Morgantown opening in the fall of 2025,” Paul said. “This will be the eighth school the Professional Charter School Board has authorized so far.”
Initial enrollment is expected to be 100 pre-K through 6th-grade students with the published motto of,” Our Children, Our Future.” All students begin the required subjects and content to meet the ESEA Every Student Success Act and an Individual Performance Plan for Success (IPPS) as a road map along the way.
“I’m working with their founding board on a charter contract—negotiating the actual agreement between the authorizer and the board,” Paul said. “I hope to have that ready for approval in early January.”
The most difficult task for school administrators was to win approval from the Morgantown Planning Commission; that took about one year. Members of the commission had concerns about the amount of traffic the school would generate so close to Morgantown High School, which already brings streets to capacity at times during the day and for sporting events.
“That’s an important hurdle for them to clear in terms of opening a school next year,” Paul said. “For them to already have their order for next year is a very good sign for them to have a smooth opening next fall.”
