MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Morgantown Police Department will be on patrol through the New Year’s holiday looking for the possibility of impaired or aggressive drivers to prevent traffic crashes, according to Chief Eric Powell.

“They’re definitely mindful of that and paying particular attention to that and paying close attention when they are out doing their patrols,” Powell said. “They keep that in mind and take action when it’s called for.”

For residents that are planning a party, Powell asks them to try to prevent people from drinking too much. Having other beverage options and plenty of food options can keep people from becoming too intoxicated to drive. Always have a plan in case someone does become too intoxicated to drive and make your guests aware of what the plan will be when that happens.

“If you’re hosting a party, be mindful of your guests and make sure you’re keeping an eye on them,” Powell said. “You also should have a plan about how you might help someone get home safely and not get behind the wheel.”

For those who go out for the night, they should also have a plan. If you plan to drink, Powell said the best plan is to plan not to drive. But if you do go out and drink, he advises people to have the numbers for the various services that can offer transportation with you or, even better, use the designated driver program.

“Have a plan to get home safely, whether that be through a designated driver, a friend, or an alternate form of transportation like an Uber, rideshare, or taxi,” Powell said.

Powell also said using the buddy system is helpful in groups. Placing keys in a secure location before the party starts is always a good idea, and having people in the group that agree not to consume alcohol is also a good policy.

“It’s always a good idea to have someone that you know, a friend that may not be drinking, to give your keys to,” Powell said. “To be your buddy and watch over you to make sure you’re safe to drive.”
