MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Beginning this fall, West Virginia University is launching WVU Guarantee, a new last-dollar-in program that will provide funding to cover the costs of tuition and university fees for incoming and current in-state students.

On WAJR’s “Talk of the Town,” Interim Vice President of Enrollment Management Steve Hahn said this is a very important part of their land grant mission.

“We have a special mission to make sure those who want an education get it, so we want to lower the barriers,” Hahn said. “We believe this WVU Guarantee does exactly that.”

The program is open to resident undergraduate students on all WVU campuses with a household adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less and that complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If family income rises above the $65,000 limit after initial enrollment as an undergraduate, the university will continue to honor the program.

“If we did this today, it would affect about 400 students across all of our campuses,” Hahn said. “This is an estimate only; every class is different, as you know, and we are still very much in the business of building a really good class for next year.”

The program requires no application other than filling out the FAFSA. Hahn said once the FAFSA is filed, the university will do the rest and notify the student.

“We will look at the aid you’re getting, and we will pay for the balance of your tuition and fees to make sure you pay no tuition and fees until you graduate,” Hahn said.

Hahn said the program is essentially automatic, triggered by the FAFSA submission, and students will see the contributions from the program when they receive a statement.

“We will take care of the rest and inform the student,” Hahn said. “When they see their financial aid package, they’ll know it’s in there because they will see a zero balance for university tuition and fees.”

Hahn said incoming students for the fall 2025 semester can file their FAFSA form any time prior to Aug. 1 to be evaluated for the program.

“We do admissions all year long, so we will accept your application and look for your application right up until Aug. 1 for the incoming fall,” Hahn said.
