MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has announced plans to recover a car discovered partially submerged in Cheat Lake.
Recovery specialists are preparing to deal with the unique challenges presented by the frozen lake. Ice rescue experts and diving units are planning to begin the operation on Sunday January 26th, 2025 during the late morning into the early afternoon hours, pending weather conditions and the completion of safety assessments.
The Murrysville, Pennsylvania Medic One Dive Team, Morgantown Fire Department Dive Team, Granville Fire Department Dive Team, Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department, MECCA 911, West Virginia DOH and West Virginia University Emergency Management will are participate in the recovery. Summers Towing will assist with the removal of the vehicle.
Motorists should avoid Interstate 68 eastbound between exits 7 and exit 10 starting at 10 a.m. for about three (3) hours Sunday. The proposed detour is to route traffic off of Interstate 68 at exit 7 through state route 857 North to Bowers Lane, then travel south on Turnpike 43 and rejoin I-68 at exit 10.
