COOPERS ROCK, W.Va. — Snow or no snow, the Coopers Rock Winter Fest is planned for Saturday, February 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On WAJR’s “Talk of the Town,” Coopers Rock Foundation Board member for more than 30 years Adam Polinski said the activities are free, proceeds from concession sales, and donations will be used to finance improvements at the Rhododendron Campground.

“The simpler, more basic one,” Polinski said. “The one where you camp only with a campfire, not an RV. This campground was built long enough ago that the roads won’t handle big vehicles like that.”

Even with no snow, they still plan to have slingshot paintball target shooting, a “Cool Spots in the Cold” hike, and a winter tree identification hike.

“Kids chasms and corridors crawl, which is in the rocks right behind the concessions stand at Coopers Rock,” Polinski said. “And how to measure a tree and get the total score.”

The grand finale of the event is the Women’s Frying Pan Toss at 3 p.m. Polinski said it’s a test for the ladies to see who can throw a five-pound skillet the farthest.

“The record, by the way, for your curious listeners, is about 66 feet,” Polinski said. “So, if you think you can throw a five-pound skillet farther than that, I have a trophy for you.”

Polinski urges residents to dress the part when they come to the park. Even without snow, Polinski said dressing the part will at least create the atmosphere.

“We’re encouraging people to wear their old vintage clothing,” Polinski said. ” Your old winter gear you never get a chance to pull out.”
