MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Motorists were greeted Friday with a surprise closure of I-68 westbound for most of the day.

The closure was first reported around 6 a.m. and extended until approximately 2 p.m.

The closure resulted in some traffic taking to the I-68 median to reverse course or diverting to northbound I-79. Traffic diverted to northbound then congested the Westover exit to either go south on I-79 or use surface streets to get to their destination.

Unconfirmed reports said the contractor working on the bridge closed the ramp from I-68 westbound to I-79 southbound for emergency repairs. The state Division of Highways did not respond to a request for information.
