BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — A malfunction in a piece of machinery in a maintenance building on the Pratt & Whitney Engine Services campus in Bridgeport early Wednesday was quickly extinguished by multiple fire departments.

Bridgeport Fire Chief Phil Hart said they received the dispatch at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday.

“We conducted a quick attack on the fire and contained and controlled it to the building of origin,” Hart said. “It did not spread to any exposed structures.”

Firefighters had the blaze under control in 20 minutes, and it appears to be accidental.

“It was a maintenance building; a piece of machinery caught fire and spread to some contents inside the building, but everything was contained to that,” Hart said.

Hart said there were no injuries and the fire will not disrupt operations at the facility. Additionally, there were no hazardous materials involved in the blaze.

“It never affected the main facility, and it will not hamper the operations of the plant,” Hart said. “There were no hazardous materials involved.”

Firefighters from Bridgeport, Nutter Fort, Spelter, and Stonewood also responded. Harrison EMS and Pratt & Whitney safety personnel assisted at the scene.

The facility on Midway Park Drive in Bridgeport employs about 400 and has been in operation for more than 50 years.
