REYNOLDSVILLE, W.Va. — A man was rescued and taken to the hospital after trying to save a dog that fell into a frozen pond Wednesday morning in Harrison County.

The Reynoldsville Volunteer Fire Department and EMS crews responded to a call on a remote spot by Water Slide Road just before 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 20 for a water rescue at Water Slide Pond.

According to the Harrison County 911 Communications Center, a call was reported that a dog had fallen through the ice about 30 feet into the center of the pond when a man in his 50s took a watercraft into the pond to try to save the dog. The man reportedly later fell in but was removed from the water by emergency crews and transported to United Hospital Center in Clarksburg by Harrison County EMS for treatment.

Reynoldsville firefighters who responded to the call said he was in the freezing water for about an hour but was conscious and alert when he was removed from the water.

Responders also reported that the dog the man was trying to rescue died.

The Nutter Fort Fire Department also responded.
