WESTON, W.Va. — A 3-year-old child is in critical condition, and the parents are facing neglect charges after an incident with a gun in February.

Troopers from the West Virginia State Police say on February 17th they responded to a report of a 3-year-old who had suffered a gunshot wound.

The investigation showed the parents, Caleb Heckert and Corinda Heater, left a pistol within reach of the child.

Troopers also said the home was filthy and “deplorable.”

The parents have been charged with child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury and are being held in the Central Regional Jail, both on $100,000 bonds.

The investigation remains active.
