MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Officials have announced the resumption of the Morgantown Police Department’s (MPD) Safe Streets Initiative as of March 1.
The program was implemented in August of last year and extended through the holiday season to increase the visibility of police and safety of the public.
“With St. Patrick’s Day and warmer weather coming our way, we want to remind everyone to be responsible while enjoying our wonderful downtown area and other locations in Morgantown,” Chief of Police Eric Powell said. “We want people to act safely and feel secure no matter where they are visiting. Like always, we strive to serve and protect our citizens. Safe Streets ultimately enhances the services we provide.”
The Safe Streets program includes foot patrols near trails, school access points, and downtown area businesses. The program has been a deterrent for drivers operating their motor vehicles while under the influence, disorderly conduct, drug possession, and other criminal violations.
“While folks might be enjoying green beer next week, we ask them to embrace a clear mind strategy or plan that utilizes designated drivers, responsible consumption, and making smart choices that protect everyone,” Deputy Chief Chris Ruehmer added. “Green vibes and safe rides is our motto this St. Patrick’s Day. Cheers to safety. Don’t drink and drive.”
Citizens can play an important role in the Safe Streets program by actively reporting crime.
“If you see it, report it,” Chief Powell stated.
