MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Better Business Bureau serving Greater West Virginia will hold their first identity theft protection event in Morgantown Saturday.

Laura Blankenship with the Better Business Bureau said residents can have documents shredded and electronics recycled from 9 a.m. to noon at the Monongalia County Center in Mylan Park.

“Anything that is paper, credit cards, or things of that sort and anything with staples in it we can shred for you,” Blankenship said. “We shed everything on site for you.”

This is not a drop off event, residents will have the opportunity to “stand by” as their personal information is shredded and disposed of.

” So, we’re very mindful of that,” Blankenship said. ” That’s why we shred it onsite in front of you. You watch them shred it right in front of you so you know it’s been disposed of.”

Blankenship said with identity theft cases on the rise, residents should think about getting rid of old credit card statements, IRS tax records, credit card offers, or anything that lists personal information that is no longer needed.

“Anything that could link a scammer to your information that could help them commit identity theft you want to have shredded,” Blankenship said. “It’s very important, not to just throw away those items because you never know where your trash goes.”

Residents can also bring things like small appliances, batteries, cable, CDs, cell phones, circuit boards, computers, game consoles, ink & toner cartridges, IT equipment, keyboards & mice, laptops, modems, monitors, MP3 players, phone systems, printers, routers, satellite boxes, servers, speakers, switches, telecom equipment, TV’s, UPS units, video games, and wire.
