CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — Clarksburg police arrested a soggy assault suspect after a foot pursuit of more than 30 minutes.

On April 18, officers were dispatched to a location on Coleman Avenue on a report of a suspicious person looking into vehicles and spoke to Danny Payne, 47. Payne told police he was looking for his friend and began to walk in the direction of Adamston.

A short time later, police observed Payne walk into a parking lot on West Pike Street where an assault had taken place earlier.

The victim of the assault identified his attacker as Payne and said he hit him in the head with a 19-inch steel pipe.

Police said the victim has a knot and an open wound to the head.

Payne then fled on foot from the scene into the woods and into the river before being captured along River Road near Comfort Court.

Payne has been charged with malicious assault and is being held in North Central Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
