MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Polls will be closed ahead of the final day of early voting for the 2025 Morgantown Municipal Election.

Morgantown City Clerk Christine Wade announced on WAJR’s Talk of the Town Thursday morning that the early voting polls located at the Historic Train Depot at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park will be closed on the Friday ahead of the polls opening on Saturday. Polls are expected to be open at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will be open for most of the day.

“The last day is at the Historic Train Depot at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park, which is 185 Garrett Street, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Wade.

Voter identification will be required for any Morgantown resident who wishes to vote in the Morgantown Municipal Election. According to Wade, this will include a combination of your voter registration card as well as any evidence that shows that you either reside in Morgantown or confirms your identity. Any forms of federal or state identification or something as simple as a utility bill will be accepted as a form of ID, with a full list of acceptable items of identification available on the City of Morgantown website.

“There is quite a long list of things that folks can bring with them to show who they are,” said Wade. “Their driver’s license, their voter’s registration, their utility bill-there are quite a few things that are out there.”

According to Wade, early voting numbers have shown that there might be a chance to see voting participation numbers increase for the 2025 Morgantown Municipal Election. In the most recent early voting numbers released by the city, over 450 votes have been cast ahead of polls opening on Thursday, a near 50-vote improvement over last year. Those numbers are expected to improve based on turnouts for early voting in past municipal elections.

“It looks like we might beat our last year’s numbers for early voting. I think that we had a good start,” said Wade. “But we always look forward to the last days of early voting because we see that we have a lot of folks showing up on the last day.”

Once early voting polls close on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., anyone wishing to vote in the Morgantown Municipal Election will have to wait until election day on April 29. On the ballot will include candidates running for the Second, Fourth, and Sixth Ward Morgantown City Council seats, as well as consideration to vote to repeal a citywide camping ban ordinance and adjust residential requirements for people hired as the Morgantown City Manager. With several key positions and measures on the ballot, Wade hopes Morgantown residents will stop by the Historic Train Depot at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park to cast a vote.

“In 2023, at the beginning of early voting, our voter registration number was about 13,094; this year it was 13,480,” said Wade on the positive outlook on voter turnout. “So we’re looking forward to seeing those folks come out to early voting on election day.”
