CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The former chief operating officer at a Morgantown medical clinic has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for bank fraud.

Francisco Ortiz, 50, of Vacaville, California, diverted more than $650,000 from Wedgewood Physicians, Inc., for things like travel, home improve,ents, and online purchases.

Ortiz is also guilty of diverting proceeds from the practice to co-defendant, James Mersing, a physician formerly employed by the practice. Mersing pled guilty to his role and was sentenced in October 2024.

Ortiz was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $692,176.19.

Following his term in prison, Ortiz will serve five years of supervised release.
