TERRA ALTA, W.Va. — The Preston County Health Department announced that a rabid fox has been reported in the county.

According to a post on the Preston County Health Department Facebook page, an independent laboratory test confirmed rabies was found in the Terra Alta area after a fox and dog encounter that took place in late April. This is the first laboratory-confirmed rabies case in the county this year.

Health department officials are encouraging pet owners to ensure their cats and dogs are vaccinated by six months of age with a booster within one year of the initial vaccination and then every three years thereafter per WV Code §19-20A-2.

Officials also encourages Preston County residents not to approach wild animals. If an exposure does happen, seek medical attention immediately.

If your pet is attacked by a wild animal, officials suggest wearing protective gloves if you must handle your animal and follow up with your veterinarian as needed.
