HARRISON COUNTY, W.Va. –– Deputies from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department arrested a suspected intoxicated driver after a child was ejected from his vehicle during a crash.

Deputies said Ryan Smarr, 33, was driving on Route 19 on April 23 when he drove off the side of the road, hit a utility pole, and rolled down the roadway, striking three parked vehicles.

Deputies said a 6-year-old child was not restrained and was ejected through the roof of the vehicle during the rollover.

Deputies said Smarr was found with his arm pinned under the vehicle and appeared to be intoxicated.

Smarr and the child were taken to United Hospital Center and then transported to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Deputies said several alcoholic beverage bottles were found inside and outside the vehicle, and there was a strong odor of alcohol.

Smarr has been charged with felony child neglect and is free on bond.
