MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVRC Media is ready to host their annual Free Play Freedom Day, with the first event of the summer scheduled to take place at Mylan Park.
Radio personalities from WVAQ will be on hand to welcome attendees on Friday, June 6th, at the Peak Health Aquatic and Track Complex at Mylan Park, where admission will be free for anyone who wants to enjoy the grand opening of the Huntington Community Pool and Splash Pad. WVAQ D.J. Jason Knight will emcee the Free Play Freedom Day, which will also include food trucks, bounce houses, and giveaways that will be hosted until 8 p.m.
“We’ll be out there with the broadcast starting at noon tomorrow, and it goes all day long until 7 o’clock,” said Knight. “Games, prizes, food trucks, and the whole part of the free play part of it is that they’re waiving admission at Mylan Park.”
While rain is expected in the forecast, the Peak Health Aquatic and Track Complex at Mylan Park plans to have all of their outdoor water-based attractions running as part of the opening of the outdoor splash pad. This includes the water umbrella, several interactive fountains, and the popular water bucket drop. All of those will be open pending severe weather.
“There’s a whole lot of different water activities and water areas and stations that they can run around to,” said Knight. “You got a giant umbrella that dumps buckets of water and pails of water.”
In the event that rain does hit the Morgantown area tomorrow, the indoor facilities at the Peak Health Aquatic and Track Complex and Mylan Park will be open for the duration of the event. Inside the complex are a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool, a zero-depth entry six-lane pool, and a diving tower. The indoor slides will also be open, with no costs for kids to enjoy the other activities hosted throughout the day.
“The indoor pool facility, the community pool there at the aquatic center, will also be open, so if we do get a little bit of inclement weather, we’ll just move things indoors,” said Knight.
WVRC Media will host a second Free Play Freedom Day later in the summer that will be hosted at the new Marilla Park Aquatic Complex in Morgantown. Much like with the event taking place on Friday, it will be free to attend, regardless of age, with prizes and unique activities that will be hosted throughout the afternoon. With plans to still be rocking at Mylan Park on Friday, rain or shine, Morgantown area residents looking to do something with their kids now fresh out of school to drop by.
“So come out, bring your kids, grandkids, neighborhood kids, the kids next door, and come out, splash around with us, and have a great time,” said Knight.
