WHEELING, W.Va. — Former West Virginia State Senator Dr. Mike Maroney has entered an Alford plea in connection with an incident in Aug. of 2024 at a hot spot in Glen Dale.
After previous efforts to keep the media out of the courtroom, Maroney entered the plea that maintains his innocence but still acknowledges the prosecution likely has enough evidence to reach a conviction.
Glen Dale police had accused Maroney of committing an act self gratification and was observed on surveillance camera.
The case was scheduled to go to a jury trial on Wednesday, July 2.
Maroney has been fined $250 and sentenced to time served. He was ordered to serve seven days in jail after violating the terms of his bond after not complying with an order to attend and pay for drug rehab. He has also spent 30 days under home confinement.
Maroney still faces a separate criminal complaint related to an incident in Sept. of 2024 where he was accused of suspicion of driving under the influence.
A magistrate jury trial for the charge is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3.
