WESTON, W.Va. — The couple arrested in March after their toddler shot himself in the head and suffered a critical injury have been indicted by the grand jury in Lewis County.
State police said they arrested Caleb Heckert, 29, and Corinda Heater, 30, both of Buckhannon, after an interview at their home in which Heater told police the toddler was in the bathroom when the shot was fired.
Police learned Heckert allegedly crashed a vehicle while he was transporting the child to the hospital. The child later underwent emergency surgery at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Police said they recovered multiple guns, bows, knives, and rusty tools during a search of the home.
Both Heater and Heckert have been indicted on two counts of gross child neglect creating substantial risk of death, according to a press release from the Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney.
