MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Multiple crews responded to a vehicle fire that broke out on Interstate 79 in Monongalia County early Tuesday evening and caused significant delays just south of Morgantown.

According to an initial report from West Virginia 511, a semi-truck fire broke out on I-79 south along mile marker 148 near the split with I-68 at around 5:54 p.m. Crews put out the flames at around 6:30 p.m., with traffic heading towards Fairmont from both I-79, coming from the University Town Center, and I-68 westbound motorists traveling past Exit 1.

According to data in the report, the vehicle was a tractor-trailer, with the fire producing a large amount of white smoke in the area. That led to multiple lanes of traffic being closed when crews were on the scene. The right lane of I-79 south near mile marker 148 was closed for over three hours as a result of the fire.

Officials with the Monongalia County 911 Center confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Crews with Triune-Halleck, Granville, and Clinton District Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene.
