MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Health Department announced that a case of rabies was confirmed after a wild animal was captured in the northwestern part of the county.
The case was confirmed by Monongalia County Health Officer Dr. Brian Huggins late Thursday afternoon after a raccoon was captured in the New Hill area near the old Meadow Ponds Golf Course off State Route 7. The confirmation of the rabies case takes place about two weeks before the annual rabies vaccine baits were scheduled to be airdropped countywide.
Area residents are urged to make sure animals are up to date on the rabies vaccine and, if possible, to keep them inside for now.
Anyone who sees a mammal acting erratically should call 304-598-5131 during the day. The after-hours number, for emergencies only, is 304-680-4357.
Dr. Huggins is scheduled to go on WAJR’s Talk of the Town on Friday to present more details.
