FAIRMONT, W.Va. — All lanes are open and the cones are gone on an Interstate 79 widening project in Marion County.
The new six-lane widening opened to traffic Thursday about 48 hours before WVU’s home opener against Robert Morris.
Work on the three-mile section of highway began shortly after Pennsylvania-based Swank Construction Company was awarded a contract for $72.5 million in May 2021.
The widening is between the Pleasant Valley and South Fairmont exits. Three bridges were replaced as part of the project including the span that crosses the Tygart Valley River.
A Thursday afternoon DOH news release said the project is part of a larger series of projects replacing I-79 bridges from Harrison County to the Pennsylvania state line.
