MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The location for the 2025-26 warming shelter in Monongalia has been determined after a special meeting of Morgantown Community Resources Wednesday morning.
MCR board member and Monongalia County Commissioner Jeff Arnett said the Nitor Suites facility on West Run Road, operated by the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, will be the primary location for the warming shelter this year.
“The first priority option will be the facility on West Run Road,” Arnett said. “Crews are still completing some improvements to make it more accessible.”
The West Run Road facility is already operating with a full complement of staff, and the facility is familiar with many homeless people in the area. Management of the West Run Road facility was transferred to the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness from the Bartlett House last year, including the staff members.
“The idea being that facility already has day and night staff to help accommodate the operation,” Arnett said. “It’s more of a logistical practicality than having it at Hazel’s House of Hope, where a new staff would have to be hired.”
The social service hub on Scott Avenue, Hazel’s House of Hope, was the site of the warming shelter last year and will be the alternate for the current year.
“Morgantown Community Resources said they would have space available if needed to have a backup in case that space is not available,” Arnett said.
Arnett thanked members of the Morgantown Community Resources Board, the Coalition to End Homelessness, the Monongalia County Commission, and the Morgantown City Council for the work and planning leading up to the announcement Wednesday.
“We do have a plan going forward on a warming shelter prior to it being 2 degrees outside, so I’d like to thank all involved,” Arnett said.
