Accused murderer found competent

MORGANTOWN, W.Va — Monongalia County Circuit Judge Russell Clawges has declared a man accused of first-degree murder competent to stand trial.

Charles Ray Shaffer, along with Brian Greeson, is accused of beating and stabbing Leslie Fields to death at the apartment the three shared on Forest Ave. in Morgantown.

Shaffer’s history of substance abuse led his attorney to request the competency check. Shaffer was evaluated by a psychologist twice and provied answers related to the charges against him and roles of different people at the trial.
