Area leaders to attend American Rescue Plan info meeting in Morgantown with Senator Manchin

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin will make a stop in Morgantown Thursday to discuss the American Rescue Plan with area leaders. On WAJR’s Talk of the Town Mon County commissioner Tom Bloom expects a full house.

“We’ve invited the commissioners from Marion and Preston Counties and the city mayors from all the different areas,” Bloom said.

The session will allow local leaders to speak directly to Senator Manchin about the $1.9 trillion package and ask questions about how the money can be spent.

“Whether you agree or not with the stimulus bill the money is here,” Bloom said,” So, let’s all start working together and figure out how to use those funds the best way possible and that’s what he’s coming here to explain.”

The American Rescue Plan releases the money directly to municipalities and counties creating a rare opportunity for local leaders to be the decision makers.

“This is the first time ever that we’ve had funds that the community can make decisions on,” Bloom said,” We do not have to go to Charleston, we do not have to the feds, now we have to follow the guidelines.”

According to information from Senator Manchin’s website Mon County is set to receive #20.48 million, Marion County $10.87 million, $6.48 million for Preston County and Morgantown will receive $10.65 million.

“Star City getting $810,000, Westover is getting $1.74 million,” Bloom said,” They’re all showing up because they not only want to thank the senator, but we’re going to get out and show them how to do it correctly.”

Manchin played a key role in keeping the minimum wage initiative out of the bill and will likely play a similar role in the upcoming debate on the Biden infrastructure plan.

“He’s one of a few senators that have major impact on getting compromises,” Bloom said,” Even though I’m a Democrat I enjoy enjoy that he is willing to work both sides.”

The Thursday meeting is at 3:30 p.m. at the Mon County Courthouse.
