Drop off tires for recycling in Mon County Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Again this year, Monongalia County will host a drop-off site for state Tire Day.

The annual event became a way to reduce the number of tires dumped as litter across the state.

The Saturday, July 11 event will be held at Wal-Mart off of Grafton Road from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Anthony “Jambie” Giambrone, Monongalia County Coordinator of Parks and Recreation, also helps coordinate county recycling initiatives.

“Normally, we take between 3,000 and 5,000 tires, and that gives people an opportunity to get rid of them. Most of the time, they take advantage of that,” Giambrone told WAJR.

He said the recycling group will take car and small truck tires even if they’re still on rims. They can take larger tires if they receive approval from the Department of Environmental Protection. Once the tires are collected, they are transported to a company in Jane Lew, where they will be safely buried until someone needs them.

“They are permitted through the DEP for water-runoff and all of that kind of stuff. It’s a pretty safe operation, and they use them as needed,” Giambrone said.

The cost of that operation is approximately $1.50 per tire, which is taken from state fees, such as the ones required when getting a license.

People can bring up to ten tires for recycling, but must have a proof of residency for the state.

Saturday also begins weekly single stream recycling collection in the county with the exception of the 5th Saturday of the month.
