Early voting begins for 2024 Morgantown Muncipal Election

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Early voting is officially underway for the 2024 Morgantown Municipal Election.

Four seats on Morgantown City Council will be decided by voters, with early voting taking place at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park’s Historic Train Depot until April 22. Polls will be open Monday through Saturday, with free parking available for people wanting to vote.

“April 12 through the 22nd is early voting, and that will be at the Historic Depot, and that does exclude Sunday,” said Morgantown City Clerk Christine Wade. “Monday through Friday is 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Saturday is 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.,” she said.

Council seats for Wards 1, 3, 5, and 7 will all be on the ballot for the 2024 Morgantown Municipal Election. Residents have received notifications on early voting dates and locations with the help of the Morgantown Election Board via bill attachments and the City Engineering Department to post signage around Morgantown. Signs are expected to be seen until election day on April 25.

“The banner went up today across High Street, so take a look when you go by,” said Wade on election signage around town. “We worked with the Morgantown Municipal Airport, the Met Theater, and the Parking Garage on the Marquis; they will have early voting and election day on that,” she said.

Ward One will have current councilor M. Joe Abu-Ghannam and Morgantown businessman James Giuliani on the ballot. Ward Five will have current Morgantown Deputy Mayor Danielle Trumble and author Marley Ynigues. Ward Seven’s ballot will include current Morgantown City Councilors Brian Butcher and Ben Mayle. Ward Three will have a former business owner and WVU Police non-certified campus safety officer, Louise “Weez” Michael, who will run unopposed. Poll worker applications will still be accepted ahead of election day.

“We still need poll workers; we have enough to fill each spot, but we typically do need alternates,” Wade said. “So please continue to spread the word; even though poll worker training is over, we can still train them,” she said.

On Election Day, polls will be open in the city’s ten polling precincts from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Votes will be counted at the Morgantown Public Safety Building, with winners expected to be announced by the end of the night. All voters who registered ahead of the April 6 deadline will be eligible to vote.

“This year, because City Hall is closed, where we typically do that, it’ll be at the Public Safety Building in the training room,” said Wade on where votes will be counted.

“All the poll workers will come back and bring their equipment there, and that’s where all the votes will be counted,” she said.

Anyone with questions involving voter registration information and precinct voting locations is asked to contact the Morgantown City Clerk’s Office at 304-284-7439.
