Hawks hold on, remain undefeated

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — For the second consecutive week, the outcome of the game came down to the final possession and for the second week in a row, University came up with a big play.

The Hawks remained undefeated, with a 29-27 win over Class AA Fairmont Senior Friday night.

Trailing 29-27, Fairmont Senior was driving to set up, at the very least, a game-winning field goal attempt. The Polar Bears moved the ball from their own 12 down to the Hawks 8-yard line with less than two minutes remaining. On first-and-goal, Fairmont Senior quarterback Conner Neal bobbled the snap and put the ball on the turf. Hawks’ defensive lineman Joshua Richie saw his opportunity and pounced on the loose ball, preserving the win for the Hawks.

“We held on. It was a dandy,” grinned coach John Kelley as his team improved to 5-0 on the season.

UHS quarterback Clay Bailey through for 275 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Evan Parrow caught a pair of passes for 124 yards and Amir Richardson snagged both of Bailey’s touchdown tosses.

Polar Bears running back Bryson Gilbert rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown while Caleb Walker added 60 yards rushing and caught two passes for 82 yards.

The Hawks are on the road next week at St. Albans (3-2), which beat Riverside 21-17.
