Malfunctioning gas water heater named cause of Morgantown apartment fire

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – During the first weather event of 2022 Morgantown firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 75 Wall Street.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 2 a.m. and made forced entry into two units that were vacant and under renovation. In one of the apartments firefighters found a small fire behind gas water heater and quickly extinguished it.

Firefighters checked other apartments to make sure the fire did not spread and ventilated the building to remove any smoke.

Damage was estimated at $5,000 and no injuries were reported. Investigators said the malfunctioning gas water heater was the cause.
