MEA to stop producing electricity after 27 years

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Effective January 1, 2020 the Morgantown Energy Associates plant on Beechurst Avenue will no longer produce electricity, but it will provide steam to both WVU campuses.

The plant has been producing about 50 mega-watts of electricity it sells to Mon Power since 1992.

PJM Interconnect coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia, including the facility on Beechurst Avenue.

Until the scheduled deactivation, PJM will conduct an analysis to make sure the power grid will remain stable post-deactivation.

Mon Power officials are buying out the remaining Electric Energy Purchase Agreement that would offer savings as long as needs can be met with existing resources.

The plant burns waste coal and natural gas- last year the facility used more than 395,000 tons.
