Morgantown airport holds emergency training exercise Wednesday (10/7)

MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown Municipal Airport will perform an Airport Emergency Plan Triennial Exercise on Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.

The exercise will allow airport staff and administration, Morgantown Police and Fire Departments, MECCA, TSA and Mon EMS to gain valuable experience and address each agency’s training needs as they respond to multiple scenarios within a Level 3 (Large) Emergency Response.

Completion of the exercise will also fulfill the airport’s Federal Aviation Administration and Transportation Security Administration requirements.

At 1 p.m. on Oct. 7, the airport director will call MECCA 911 and say “Exercise. Exercise. Exercise.” to indicate the mock emergency event has begun. MECCA will then inform the participating agencies they should begin their response.

The airport will be closed for roughly one hour on Oct. 7 starting at 1 p.m. until the exercise is complete.

Members of the media are invited to take photos and video through the runway fence during this time, and they should report to the ARFF training room at the Airport for further briefing.

“The intent is to exercise emergency responders and security forces,” said Glen Kelly, assistant city manager and interim airport director. “The different training requirements for the multiple agencies involved forces the need for multiple phases to address each agencies training needs while fulfilling the requirements that the airport has to be within federal compliance.”
