Morgantown council approves kayak rental facility

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Morgantown city council members have given city manager Paul Brake the go ahead to negotiate a change order for the construction of a scaled back kayak rental facility at the Walnut Street Landing.

The original proposal was for a a $300,000 to $400,000 kayak/bike rental facility on the Waterfront at the Walnut Street Landing. The city administration told council there was a possibility to partner with a private contractor, WVU or Adventure West Virginia to make the facility a reality.

Brake says the new proposal will cost about $221,000.

“A concrete facility, but with a brick veneer,”Brake said,”Similar to the restroom facility recently constructed.

The building will be financed through a “loan” from the Capital Expenditure Account and repaid through rental income and parking fees over seven years.

Brake says work could begin by the end of March and the doors could open near the beginning of summer.
