New Jersey woman accused of shopping drunk with small child in Granville

GRANVILLE, W.Va. A woman from New Jersey is facing charges after allegedly taking an infant to several Monongalia County businesses while drunk.

On Wednesday, Granville police were called to the TJ Maxx store on a report of an intoxicated woman, later identified as Debby Donis-Veliz, 29, of Trenton, New Jersey, with a small child.

When police arrived, she had left, but officers found Donis-Veliz and the one-year-old child checking out at the Old Navy store.

Police said Donis-Veliz had a very strong odor of alcohol and admitted to having had two drinks. During the exchange, police noted she was unsteady, had bloodshot eyes, and was slurring her words.

Officers said that during a conversation with Donis-Veliz, she appeared disoriented, struggled with motor skills, and was unable to tell police how long she had been at the store and could find her keys.

Police noted she did not have food or diapers with her, but she told them they were in the car she drove to the store. Later, she told the police that someone was coming to pick her up. The police learned the person who was to pick her up did not know where she or the baby were.

Donis-Veliz has been charged with child neglect and is being held in the North Central Regional Jail in lieu of a $10,100 bond.
