UPDATE: Suspect killed in Mon County shooting identified

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman killed Friday in an officer-involved shooting. Christie L. Cathers, 45, of Morgantown, was shot and killed by deputies following a car that ended on Finch/Snider Run Road.

The two deputies involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on administrative leave. Sheriff Al Kisner said the action is department policy following a shooting. Kisner did not identify the deputies.

Deputies shot and killed a female suspect near the community of Brookhaven on Friday afternoon after the woman drove her vehicle toward a deputy and crashed into a police cruiser.

“We can’t really add a whole at this point,” Kisner told WAJR-AM. “We still have a lot of bases we need to cover, a lot of investigation left to do. We want to make sure we get everything right.”

The newspaper reports officers were called to Harner Run Road following a report of a woman brandishing a knife. When police arrived the suspect tried to run over a deputy and a chase ensued. At the conclusion of the chase, police shot into the vehicle, striking and killing the suspect.

“Any time something like this happens it needs to be thoroughly investigated,” insisted Kisner.

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation. Chief Deputy Perry Palmer was among the four investigators in control of the scene on Friday.

“It’s been a process but it is a process that we need to do and we do it right.”
