Victim identities released in fatal wrong-way crash

Police have released the names of the victims of a fatal accident on Interstate 68 in Monongalia County.

According to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher R. McClure, 28 of Fairmont, was traveling the wrong way on I-68 in a 2007 Ford Explorer when his vehicle side swiped one vehicle and hitting another one head-on.

That accident happened at 10:35 p.m. Friday, April 17, between the Sabraton and University Avenue exits.

McClure died at the scene.

Adrianna M. Cole, 20 of Morgantown, was headed east when her 2015 Subaru was struck head on by the McClure’s vehicle which was headed west in the eastbound lanes. Cole also died at the scene.

A third victim, Charles A. Custer, 25 of Morgantown, was treated and released from a local hospital. His 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was also hit by McClure’s vehicle.

The accident closed eastbound and westbound lanes of I-68 for at least 4 hours overnight.

McClure was a student at West Virginia University. Monday, the university issued a statement offering sympathies to the history major’s family.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the McClure family and friends,” said Corey Farris, dean of students. “We are in contact with the family to assist in any way the University can in this tragic time.”

Farris said, “Counseling is available through WellWVU and I encourage any student to contact the office (304.293.4431) or visit its new location on the Evansdale campus.”

At an appropriate time, there will be a bell-ringing to honor Christopher.
