Fairmont State will replace aging apartments

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University breaks ground on its first student housing project in many years. A $30 million dollar housing complex is expected to open in fall 2016.

Kaye Widney is the Vice President of Student Services. “What we are breaking ground for will be replacing apartments that were built in the late 60’s and early 70’s,” Widney explained.

College Park Apartments will be replaced with three buildings nearly tripling the number of beds offered for on-campus apartment living.
There will be 345 beds in the new University Terrace. The existing apartments offer just 142 beds.

According to Widney, new facilities help with student recruiting and set the tone for the type of atmosphere leaders want on campus.

“We offer the students the possibility for becoming a member of our community through these newer residence halls. I think that helps us convey to the families and to the students the great thing about being a part of the Fairmont family,” said Widney.

The design and layouts for the University Terrace housing will vary.
“We’re going to have single apartments. We’re going to have two bedroom apartments. We’re going to have apartments that will handle four people, what we’re calling quads. And, all of those will have kitchen facilities,” added Widney.

Widney said the apartments will meet students’ needs for comfort and technology.

“We’re going to make sure that all students have good solid furniture in there. We’re going to have this facility wireless. So, that is a very nice convenience for students.”

The new construction will include community space for studying and socializing, a courtyard and a small amphitheater.
