Comcast announces plans to impose data cap on internet usage next year

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Beginning next year, Comcast will impose a 1.2TB per month home internet data cap in multiple states, including West Virginia. The data cap will be expanded to the entire American market, which includes 39 states and the District of Columbia.

In January and February, Xfinity customers not using an unlimited service will be credited for all data usage over the 1.2TB limit. The new policy kicks in for the month of March, but Comcast offers a once a year courtesy month for customers who exceed the limit. The earliest a customer could incur the additional charge is April. After that, customers who go over the limit, will be charged $10 per 50GB of data not to exceed a maximum monthly penalty of $100.

Comcast officials say 95 percent of their customers used less than 1.2TB per month, even during the online usage spike from COVID-19. Officials also say 1.2TB “is a massive amount of data” and say it would last around 500 hours of streaming HD video and 3,500 hours of videoconferencing.

The cap will also affect Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, and parts of both North Carolina and Ohio.
