MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Monongalia County residents seem to be dealing well with the most recent winter weather event.
MECCA 911 Executive Director Jim Smith said they responded to eight accidents and three motorist assists. Snowfall is forecast to continue through Saturday, and Smith advises people to be prepared if they do get on area roads.
“If you do have to get out there today, just make sure you take your time and leave yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going,” Smith said. “Definitely slow down and remember to leave that space between you and the vehicle in front of you.”
Kathy Lee from Doug’s Towing in Westover said they have been busy with six trucks and drivers helping area motorists.
“It’s actually a mixture—we have some tows, we have some jumps because of the cold weather, and a lot of wench outs,” Lee said.
MetroNews Accuweather Meteorologist Jeff Nordean said the snow continues through the day and is expected to taper off into Saturday. When the snow moves out of the region, frigid air will fill that void until the beginning of the week, when temperatures rise to near 40 degrees.
“We’re looking at temperatures in the upper teens for highs, and when we factor in the Accuweather Real-Feel, we are dipping that down into the single digits,” Nordean said.
At Doug’s Towing, those six drivers are expected to work through the storm 24-hours a day until the system passes.
“Our secretary, or whoever is on call that night, dispatches it out to the driver, and they get up no matter what time it is, day or night, and they get up and go,” Lee said.
Brandon Myers is out removing snow for customers, and he’s glad to be in the seat of his John Deere skid loader, which he said was on one snow removal job last year. Today, Myers said he’d be in the piece of equipment all day long.
“Snow removal is hit or miss,” Myers said. “You’re either on top of the world, feeling rich, or you’re broke.”
