ALDI interested in opening store in Sabraton

MORGANTOWN — Grocery chain ALDI is interested in bringing a store to Sabraton, but it is not yet known whether it plans to relocate one of its two existing Morgantown stores or open a third.

According to a legal advertisement that ran in The Dominion Post, ALDI Inc. has three items on the Jan. 10 agenda for the Morgantown Planning Commission.

The requests pertain to 1351 Earl L. Core Road, the former location of the Freedom Ford Lincoln dealership.

ALDI is looking for Type III Development of Significant Impact site plan approval as well as variance relief pertaining to building setbacks and parking/loading standards.

When asked on Dec. 27 if the chain planned to relocate an existing store or open a new location, ALDI Saxonburg Division Vice President J.R. Perry said there are no updates regarding a potential new store in Morgantown.

Perry provided the same response to similar inquiries on Oct. 1.

According to city code, a development of significant Impact are those that have a citywide or regional impact. Such impacts could involve the transportation network, environmental features such as parks or stream corridor, local schools, etc. Such developments could include large-scale residential commercial or mixed-use developments, employment centers, regional shopping centers, industrial and/or manufacturing, and extractive industry.

Additional information was not available from the city in time for this report.

According to the ALDI website, the chain operates more than 1,600 stores in 35 states and serves more than 40 million customers each month.
