Another snow day for Mon. Co. students Tuesday, Jan. 26

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Monongalia County students will spend another day at home in the aftermath of winter storm Jonas.

Tuesday’s snow day is the first missed day that will have to be tacked on to the end of the school year.

“We will, in fact, be going into non-calendar days or days we have to make up from this point forward,” explained Monongalia County Schools Superintendent Dr. Frank Devono. “We have to make all of these up. It’s just now we go beyond the 200 days.”

The week prior, schools were delayed or canceled every day with the exception of Monday, January 18 which was a scheduled day off for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Devono said facilities and grounds were prepped Monday for the return of students and staff.

“We’re still having trouble with finding a place to put the snow. That’s been difficult for a lot of our schools because our parking lots are so large. We’ve also been getting sidewalks ready, getting the buildings ready making sure that’s fine as well,” added Devono.

Until road crews can catch up on plowing, getting buses to students remained impossible Monday afternoon.

“We’re trying to work closely with the DOH. We’ve identified some roads for them that we’d like for them to widen because we can’t get a bus down.”

Even when roads are open from the inches and feet of snow from Jonas, Devono said drivers will be looking for other obstacles in preparation of returning back to work.

“We have to identify the turnarounds that our buses are going to be on on some of those roads. We’ve got to make sure those are clear tomorrow. So, we’re going to go out tomorrow and make sure those are cleaned as well,” added the superintendent.
