Asel Kennedy remembered

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Those who knew Asel Kennedy remembered him fondly Monday, as funeral services for the former County Commissioner and WVU extension agent helped lay him to rest Monday morning.

Kennedy was also fondly remembered for his time spent on the airwaves at WAJR, with a regular morning segment that MetroNews’ Chris Lawrence described as “must hear radio every time.”

“Every morning he was on the radio on WAJR at 6:30,” Lawrence said on Morgantown AM. “I mean, that was must hear radio. Everybody started their day after Asel was done.”

Retired WAJR personality Kay Murray said she’d known Asel Kennedy for decades.

“He was a good man, just a good man,” she said. “He’ll be missed.”

“I guess I go back to how long I’ve known Asel,” she said. “Really we go back to Junior High School, a school called Riverside Junior High. It’s not there anymore like most things our age. Asel was a basketball player, and I was a cheerleader.”

Kennedy would tease Murray about her age — seeing as she was just a little older than him.

“We used to tell that story a lot on Morgantown AM, but he always said, ‘You know Kay, you’re older than I am,'” Murray said. “And he was right. I was about nine months older, but he never let me live it down. I want you to know it.”

Lawrence recalled that Kennedy staked $1,500 of his own money to help him get his car repaired during his first month working at WAJR.

“Not knowing me more than a month or so, and trusting that I would pay it back,” he said. “He was that kind of a guy. He did that for lots of people.”
