Basketball Fever: WVU and Marshall win, Boys Basketball Tourney continues

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Top-seeded University fell 48-45 in a come-from-behind upset loss to No. 4 Martinsburg in Class AAA action Friday.

University (25-2) led by as much as 16 points, but couldn’t close out the Bulldogs (22-5).

Martinsburg scored the game’s final nine points and overall ended the contest on a 12-2 run over the final 2:52.

The Bulldogs will face George Washington (22-3) Saturday night. Tip at 7:15 p.m.

In Class AA, No. 1 Fairmont Senior (25-0) cruised past No. 4 Philip Barbour (22-4) 99-62 to advance to the finals.

They face No. 2 Chapmanville Regional (26-1), tipping at noon Saturday.

In Class A, No. 5 Trinity Christian (19-8) fell to No. 1 Wheeling Central (24-2) 61-45 just one day after a thrilling double OT victory over 2016-17 champion Notre Dame (18-7).

Wheeling Central will face No. 2 Ravenswood in the title match, set for 2:30 p.m.

In the NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers and Thundering Herd both won Friday afternoon, setting up a showdown in California with a Sweet 16 berth riding on the outcome.

5-seed WVU (25-10) topped 12-seed Murray State (26-6) 85-68.

13-seed Marshall (25-10) earned their first tournament victory in school history by upsetting 4-seed Wichita State (25-8) 81-75.
