Brunch bill discussions beginning among Monongalia Co. leaders

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — When the West Virginia Municipal Home Rule Board meets in October, members will likely be met with a request from the City of Morgantown to take advantage of the Brunch Bill.

Tuesday, City Manager Jeff Mikorski advised council to have the issue on upcoming agendas including a public hearing on September 6.

Before the next Home Rule Board meeting, council will have to have taken public comment and approved two readings of a measure to allow earlier alcohol sales on Sunday.

The state legislature passed a law allowing municipalities and commissions to discuss the option of allowing alcohol to be sold as early as 10 a.m. on Sunday rather than after 1 p.m.

On July 11, the Home Rule Board accepted requests for amendments from Clarksburg, Bluefield, Charleston, South Charleston, Lewisburg and Martinsburg to use home rule to consider local brunch bill laws.

Wednesday, the Monongalia County Commission is expected to discuss a request from the Morgantown Area Chamber of Commerce & Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to place the brunch bill on the November 2016 general election ballot.

The state legislation requires counties to call for a referendum on brunch bill proposals locally.
