Camper rescued, airlifted from Cheat River campsite Saturday

BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va. – Multiple agencies teamed up to rescue a camper along the Cheat River on Saturday morning.

Members of the Bruceton-Brandonville Volunteer Fire Department were called just before 6 a.m. Saturday to the “Big Splat” area on a report that a camper had fallen overnight and was incapacitated.

Rescue workers from the Mountaineer Area Rescue Group (MARG), KAMP EMS, and firefighters from Bruceton, Albright, and Masontown launched a multi-hour rescue effort that required the use of multiple rope systems to reach the injured camper. Rescuers trekked about a mile in rough terrain with poor communications during the rescue.

The camper was treated at the scene and airlifted to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment by the Maryland State Police.

No names have been released. The condition of the camper is not known.
