Decorated World War II vet, Grafton native dies at 100

GRAFTON, W.Va. – The last surviving member of the World War II destroyer the USS John Hood, Otha Compton died over the weekend at the age of 100. Compton was awarded the three Bronze Stars. the Asiatic and Pacific Ribbons and the Victory Medal during his service.

The USS John Hood played a key role during the war and post-war occupation of Japan.

In addition to supporting the community in many ways, he also was the co-founder of Bridgeport American Legion Post 68, served on the board of the Salvation Army and was a member of the Elks, V.F.W. Compton worked in coal, real estate, insurance and started Compton Bowling Lanes on Old Route 50 East.

Calling hours for Compton will be Tuesday, July 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church Wednesday from 10 a.m. to the time of service at 10:45 a.m.
