Delays expected for I-79 bridge demolition Friday in Marion County

MARION COUNTY, W.Va.-– The state Department of Highways (DOH) has announced plans to demolish the South Fairmont Arch Bridge on I79 Friday morning as part of the $72.5 million widening project from Harrison County to the Pennsylvania state line.

Northbound and southbound restrictions are planned between 9 and 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023, from mile marker 132 to mile marker 133 as crews prepare to blast the northbound portion of the river that spans the Tygart River.

Workers from Swank Construction have scheduled a rolling roadblock for approximately 10 a.m. to bring the span down.

The southbound span was demolished in March 2023.

The northbound span was constructed in 1966.

For safety reasons, only authorized personnel are allowed within the explosives loading and handling area.

Public viewing is not allowed.

Vinegar Hill Road, Marion County Route 60, will be closed for the remainder of the week to prepare for demolition.
